WARSAW NIGHTLIFE

Conjuring images of mid-90s Berlin nightlife, the Polish capital has come a long way fast and today offers a heady mix of pleasures and vices that come guaranteed to suit all tastes. Whether you’re looking for cutting edge lounge bars, avant garde student dives or celeb filled nightclubs, Warsaw offers a breathless wealth of nocturnal options to keep the adventuring stag occupied. Commonly misconceived as a deeply conservative country, the natives know a good time and liberal drinking laws keep many bars and clubs open until the last guest chooses to stumble out. Although Warsaw lacks a natural gravitational point for a night out, the city has emerged as one of the most exciting evenings in New Europe, with dynamite local vodkas and the world’s most stunning ladies adding fuel to what we promise to be an unforgettable party.

No Warsaw stag weekend is complete without a visit to a microbrewery, and you’ve got two excellent options to choose from. Not far from old town BrowArmia offers a series of house brews served inside a fashionably industrial setting that contains all manner of dials, pipes and brewing gadgets. Down the road Bierhalle don’t actually brew their own beers on-site (for that pleasure visit their flagship venture by the Arkadia Shopping Mall), but do offer a range of potent lagers that come served in either tall ten litre pipes or more standard measures – ideal for groups of roving lads. But while Polish beer is famed for its dynamite properties, the alcohol most commonly associated with the country is vodka. In Sense you have a choice of more than a hundred of them, all served by some of the most adept bar tenders in the country. Known by some as Warsaw’s original fusion restaurant this spot continues to serve as a magnet for local airheads and business sorts looking to start their night with top cocktails inside one of the trendiest environments in the city. For similar high-end pleasures visit Foksal 19, located on one of Warsaw’s most famous streets for socializing. Interiors are sleek, modern and design conscious, as are the punters you find gliding from table to table. Equally impressive is Melodia; formerly a hangout for local commie party officials this multi-level space blurs the boundaries between restaurant, bar and club, and this is a popular finishing point for Warsaw’s A-list. If you see yourself flouncing around with complicated cocktails trying to impress the local blond gold diggers then you won’t find many places that outdo Paparazzi, a fantastic cocktail bar with giant black and white snaps of celebs and a dancefloor that fills with local hotshots doing their best to impress.

The area around pl. Trzech Krzyzy and ulica Zurawia has undergone a particular renaissance with a slew of upmarket bars opened in recent times. In summer you’ll find the area besieged with beer garden furniture, and many of the bars – Szpilka and Szparka in particular – operate until daybreak. The area is ideal for both pub-crawling or for topping off your alcohol count after returning from the dance floors of Warsaw. Hardcore after-hours drinkers though tend to head to one place in particular – Bar Lemon on ul. Sienkiewicza. An absurd lemon theme comes neatly paired with round-the-clock opening hours and a set of party casualties applying the concluding touches to their hangovers. Pick up an aspirin from the bar and let the day drift away. Flanking Lemon you’ll find Organza, a commendable spot playing good time house, disco and Latin sounds to a youngish crowd, while on the other side lies the incredibly popular Sheesha; a middle-eastern themed bar/club crowded with hookah pipes and Arabic dance grooves. For something completely different make a beeline for Ice Bar, an ultra-fashionable spot where temperatures are kept hovering at minus eight and the interiors come crafted out of ice; completely pompous, but an intriguing diversion from more mainstream efforts. Those who don’t except anything but the best will need to don their finest designer tags to gain admittance to The Cinnamon, a Warsaw legend that has acquired cult status amongst the local gliterrati. Found inside a building designed by Sir Norman Foster this still rates as Warsaw’s most exclusive venue, with a futuristic interior complimented by long-legged blondes discussing modeling contracts while DJs spin mainstream house sounds.

Warsaw’s lounge scene should not be overlooked, and you won’t find better than NoBo, a scarlet den of intrigue that doesn’t differ much from an upmarket Marrakech opium den. Although reasonably quiet during the weekend this place transforms at weekends when DJs have the crowds dancing on the crimson sofas well into the night. Mingle with Z-list celebrities at the cleverly designed Milch Supper Club, or head to Level to drink in a hallucinogenic interior that reminds of Alice in Wonderland. Once more, dress the part if you want to fit in. For a more boozy atmosphere then make tracks in the direction of Lolek, a rotund beer hall with the foggy ambiance of a Bavarian beer den, and a popular stop off for touring sports teams. Ideal for larger groups is the Warsaw Tortilla Factory, an informal venue that combines the best Tex-Mex food in Warsaw with a zippy atmosphere and cocktails that will leave you seeing stars. If you need to keep track of the sports scores then head to Champions Bar inside the Marriott Hotel complex, where countless TV screens are tuned to every sports channel imaginable. Pool tables, beeping darts machines and a full menu are available for those after-match moments. Within striking distance find Bradley’s Bar, an Irish themed effort with one of the warmest welcomes in Warsaw. Sky Sports and BBC come zapped onto the projector courtesy of one of the largest satellite dishes in Warsaw, while all-day fry ups and other heart attack bites keep the crowds in good humour. The Irish landlord Kevin is well-known in local rugby circles and this should be one of the first ports of call for lads on the lager. Another Irish owned spot that should figure highly on any itinerary is the expat favourite, Bar Below. Occupying a modern cellar space find the best pub grub menu in Warsaw, as well as a number of plasma screens relaying football, rugby and cricket throughout the day; quiet during the week this venue becomes a serious source of amnesia at the weekends. Find more Brit football, as well as frequent live music, in the more serious surrounds of the Sheraton’s Someplace Else bar.

"We had a fantastic time in Warsaw, we loved every minute of it :-) The hotel was great & the whole weekend was very well organised. Karolina & Amanda looked after us very well and were always there when we needed them. We've all been on many stag do's but this was the BEST. Thanks for all your help even at such late notice to get us booked in at the Ice bar & Desperados" Thanks, Nathan (Birmingham)

When it comes to nightclubs you’ll find several choices to consider, though again its worth bearing in mind many of Warsaw’s more lauded clubs adopt ruthless dress codes. One such place is Klubokawiaria, an unmarked covert club only recognizable by the line of cabs standing outside. Once entry is gained expect top house sounds inside a sweaty subterranean cellar decorated with remnants of the bygone socialist era. The more mainstream Enklawa and Desperado’s attract a good-looking crowd that ranges from young local Barbies, to leering elder expats, and its cheerful blend of chart music, booze and floozies often leads to colourful stories the following day. Not dissimilar in style and substance is Dekada, a notorious flesh market that is a must for any night that is focused on life’s simpler pleasures. For something a little more youthful Ground Zero – found inside a former nuclear bunker – is commonly regarded as a rite of passage for visitors, and packed with young lads getting their female counterparts drunk on alcopops. Hardcore clubbers more committed to music than pulling should not forego a visit to Luztro, a dark dump which showcases the best techno and electronic acts in Poland; don’t be surprised to find the weekend whiz by in a chemically enhanced blur. For a more upmarket interior to showcase your dance moves look no further than Platinum, a super effort glowing colours and luxurious fittings inside a building that once housed a bank. Those wishing to relive their university days should don their afros and spangly shirts and take to Club 70, which is exactly what you would imagine to be. On a final note absolutely no Warsaw stag do can ignore a trip to one of the city’s lap dancing clubs, and Sofia is the best of the lot; two large halls come staffed with an army of women who would not be out of place on a centre-fold, and the private dances are assured to be a sight more stimulating than whatever you may be accustomed too back home.
